Veteran's Benefit

Did you know that you may be eligible for a little-known (non-service connected) veteran’s benefit that is in addition to the basic pension? The benefit is called VA Aid and Attendance and can help cover the costs of assisted living, memory care, nursing home care, adult day care and even in-home care.

Maximum pension amounts for 2024 are shown below:

  • A surviving spouse could receive up to $1,478 per month, which equals $17,736 for the year.
  • A single veteran could receive up to $2,300 per month, which comes out to $27,600 for the year.
  • A married veteran could receive up to $2,727 per month, which comes out to $32,724 for the year.
  • A married spouse (of a veteran) who needs care could receive up to $1,806 per month, which comes out to $21,672 for the year.

There are certain criteria that must be met for a veteran or their surviving spouse to qualify for a VA pension. These include the following:

Wartime veterans who served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a period of war, and their surviving spouses (whose marriage ended due to death of the veteran), 65 years and older, may be entitled to benefits. Veterans with sick spouses may also qualify. In addition, applicants must meet certain medical and financial criteria.

Under current law, VA recognizes the following wartime periods to determine eligibility for VA Pension benefits:

  • Mexican Border Period (May 9, 1916 – April 5, 1917 for Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or adjacent waters)
  • World War I (April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918)
  • World War II (December 7, 1941 – December 31, 1946)
  • Korean conflict (June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955)
  • Vietnam era (February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975 for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period; otherwise August 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975)
  • Gulf War (August 2, 1990 – through a future date to be set by law or Presidential Proclamation

To qualify medically, veterans or a surviving spouse (or a sick spouse) must require help with at least two of the activities of daily living, ie., bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, medication reminders, etc.. Blind applicants or those residing in a nursing home or assisted living facility may also qualify.
